Hyaluronic acid, collagen, peptide… all of these terms and ingredients are ubiquitous in today’s beauty industry jargon. But what are these ingredients, how do they help in skin care, and who should use them? If you’re not into chemistry (like me!), trying to find the answers to these questions can be a little tricky. Glycosaminoglycan… yes? Oligomers… what? Do not be afraid — I will try to answer these questions (and many others!) In the most general terms.

WHAT ARE THESE INGREDIENTS AND HOW DO THEY DIFFER?

In general, all three compounds occur naturally in the human body and play an important role in keeping our skin young and healthy.

COLLAGEN

Collagen is a protein that the body produces to support the structure of the skin and keep it firm and elastic. Because collagen production declines fairly quickly with age, our skin eventually begins to sag (read: less collagen = less structure = more wrinkles)

.HYALURONIC ACID

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is called a natural humectant because its main function in the body is to bind to water. 50% of the body’s HA is found in skin tissue, so it is a vital ingredient for maintaining healthy skin! Young skin is smooth and very supple because it contains a high concentration of both collagen and HA. HA acts as a space filler by binding to water and helps keep collagen moist and supple (read: more moisture = healthy, plump skin). Unfortunately, as we get older, the body is unable to maintain the same level of concentration, which leads to the skin becoming drier and more prone to wrinkles.

PEPTIDE

Peptides are a completely different beast. These are short chains of amino acids that are formed during the destruction of collagen and skin tissues. Peptides essentially signal to cells that the skin is damaged and that it needs to produce more collagen in order for it to heal (read: more peptides = cells produce more collagen, and HA = healthy, youthful skin).

How to take it? Obviously, all three compounds are very important in our skin care regimen. I firmly believe that you should never be too young or too old to protect and take care of your skin, hair and beauty. Lemona gueol collagen is a great solution!
